Research

The Department of Economics was started in the year 1958 with B.A. degree course in Economics. It became a post graduate department in 1984. The department produced the first rank in M.A. in 1997.

Prof. K.Indira, has played a significant role in building up the department. Later, she retired as the Principal of Government Brennan College; Thalassery. There is an endowment after her name in the department with provisions for an endowment lecture and a gold medal for the top scorer in the B.A degree examination.

The department has produced great teachers and reputed economists. Dr.N.S.Bhat, Prof. (Retired) and former Chairman of the Department of Economics, Mangalore University was a student of the first batch. He has the distinction of being the first alumnus to get a doctorate degree. Prof. T.R. Kunhambu who retired as the H.O.D of Economics, University College, Trivandrum was a student of the second batch. He has been a member of the faculty for several years. Prof. B. Batya who was elevated to the post of Deputy Director of Collegiate Education, Government of Kerala, was also an old student, and a member of the faculty for many years. Another old student K.Ramachandra Ballullaya became the Regional Manager; Bombay region of the Syndicate Bank. Dr. M. nivasa, who is serving as advisor to the ADB, Dr. M.H. Suryanarayana, who served as the Economic Advisor to the Government of Karnataka and Dr. Shyma Bhat, who is the present Chairman of the Department of Economics, Pondichery University were also products of the department.
